Video Calls / Phones
Especially if you live far away from your loved one, being able to contact them and for them to be able to contact you successfully is extremely important. It will give them reassurance and help them feel settled, and give you reassurance too.
Unfortunately, dementia can create difficulties such as a landline telephone not being put down correctly, or difficulty dialling numbers. This topic covers these issues, and our recommended approach using video calls that you can initiate without the need for them to do anything. It also covers assisted use of mobile/cell phones in care homes.
Remember that someone with dementia may not do much of the talking, but still enjoy listening to you - so don't assume silence is disinterest or having fallen asleep!
